We seek to continue to develop and improve in a sustainable way. To do this in a systematic fashion, the Confraternität & Goldenes Kreuz Private Hospital decided in 2009 to implement a quality management system in line with the EFQM Criteria. This is a model for the design, development and management of organizations and is used internationally to assess companies—the goal always being progress toward “excellence.”

Medical outcome quality

When patients choose a hospital, they want to go where they will receive the best medical care. This information is hard to come by, though. Measuring medical outcome quality is a difficult task since the basic prerequisites for an operation or a treatment are different for each individual. Nevertheless the Mavie Med private hospitals have taken on this challenging task and has begun by surveying the number of wounds that become infected by hospital as a preliminary indicator of medical outcome quality. Everything should nominally be done to prevent these infections, so the figure should approach zero. The figure below shows the values for Mavie Med private hospitals compared to the international nominal values.

Rate of infection for selected operations

Type of surgical intervention Nominal value Mavie Med Hospitals value (2024)
Hip replacement <0.98% 1.26%
Knee replacement <0.49% 0.00%
Caesarian section <0.68% 0.12%
Gallbladder removal <1.59% 0.39%
Components and instruments of quality management

The following section outlines some key components and instruments of quality management to give you an impression of how they shape our daily activities.

Active complaints management

We use feedback from our patients and our attending doctors to help us continually improve and we incorporate their suggestions into our quality assurance processes.

Complaints can be made in person during your stay, submitted in writing, by telephone, by email or by using the form on the homepage.

To ensure the professional handling of all complaints, we make it easy for anyone to file a complaint and insist on appropriate handling of and responding to complaints in addition to the systematic analysis of complaints received.

Process management

We use process management as a tool for the ongoing optimization and management of processes. It provides a clear overview of the relevant structures and guarantees transparency. All processes are depicted in a process map. This overview is key for optimizing, managing and understanding the various processes.

Each project has defined goals to guide the work of process owners and the whole process team. Our management and process owners utilize what we call a goal cockpit. This overview of relevant goals is an important tool for management and connects strategic goals with area-specific goals and process goals. We use a continual process of data collection and evaluation to assess whether the defined goals have been met.

Internal audits

Another core component of quality management is the conducting of internal audits. In addition to evaluation by outside parties, our staff assess processes internally and determine whether process descriptions, standards and guidelines have been satisfied. We can identify potential for improvement by evaluating processes for possible weak spots.

Certifications

Certifications and awards represent an important component of quality assurance and contribute to the ongoing management and continued development of our hospital.

Committed to Excellence

Confraternität & Goldenes Kreuz Private Hospital decided to use the EFQM Criteria in implementing its quality management system. These are used by around 30,000 companies from a wide range of business sectors worldwide to guide their ongoing assessment activities and encourage their continual improvement – the goal always being progress towards “excellence.”

EFQM certification

In implementing this model, Confraternität & Goldenes Kreuz conducted a self-assessment incorporating concrete criteria that identified strengths and areas for potential improvement. This led to the development and implementation of three improvement projects. These projects were evaluated by an independent validator on behalf of Quality Austria. In addition to presenting and discussing the projects, staff were interviewed with regard to the hospital’s implementation of the EFQM model. The Confraternität & Goldenes Kreuz Private Hospital passed this external audit and received the internationally recognized “Committed to Excellence” award.

RE-certification 2020

Our EFQM certification represents an important step in quality assurance, but also in the permanent further development of our hospital. Therefore, in 2020, three improvement projects were again identified and successfully implemented as part of the re-certification process. After assessment of the results by an external validator of Quality Austria, Confraternität & Goldenes Kreuz Private Hospital was again awarded the distinction "Validated by EFQM".

Certified Breast Health Center

The Confraternität & Goldenes Kreuz is the first and only private hospital in Austria with a certified Breast Health Center.

The initial assessment and certification in 2011 was carried out by Doc-Cert – an independent committee of experts from Switzerland. The prerequisites for certification include a series of demanding quality criteria that have to be checked and approved every year in a quality report. In addition, each Center is obliged to undergo a recertification audit every three years.

Experts from Doc-Cert accordingly visited the Breast Health Center on June 7 and 8 2017 to conduct a thorough evaluation.

The auditors found that the Center’s patients are provided with excellent treatment and care. This recent re-certification is evidence of the excellent standards and continuously improving quality at Confraternität & Goldenes Kreuz.
